30 people speak Spanish
20 people speak French.

Find the smallest possible number of people who speak both Spanish and French

Explanation:

There are two ways of doing this question, so i have put both in here. One is mathematically, and another with a diagram.

Mathematically:

For this we will add the two types of speaker (french and spanish)

20 + 30 = 50

but we see this is > 42 (greater than 42).

If we subtract 42 from 50 we get 8. This is the smallest number of crossover we can have.
