Why are they putting down the child when it is the mother who committed the sin in their eyes?

Because in Puritanical society, the sins of the mother are the sins of the child. The child was born out of sin, out of wedlock, and therefore, against God. Though we would view the child as an innocent, this was not the Puritanical view.
