Red balloon: r = 2 ft/s, d = x

Blue balloon: r = 3 ft/s, d = 60-40-x

d = r*t

Red balloon: d = x/2

Blue balloon: d = (20 - x)/3

x/2 = 20 - x)/3

3x = 2(20 - x)

3x = 40 - 2x

5x = 40

x = 8

Red balloon is 40 feet above the ground + 8 = 48 ft

Blue balloon: 60 - 40 = 20 - 8 = 12

60 - 12 = 48 ft

Suppose they are they are the same height above the ground at t.

so

40+2t = 60-3t

5t=20

t= 45

(solve the equation according to the meaning of questions)
