A rectangle has an area of 45 square inches. The height of the rectangle is 9 inches.

What is the width of the rectangle?

Explanation:

The formula for area is A=bh or Area = Base × Height

or you can write it as A=wh which is Width × Height

so plug in the numbers you already know

(do not worry about units right now)

45=b(9)

Now you have to get the variable b by itself

divide both sides by 9 to get b by itself

45(÷9)=b(9)(÷9)

the 9 next to the b gets canceled out

45÷9= 5

The answer is 5 inches

Always remember that the actual area's units are squared while the base and height are just the unit not squared

45in²=area

5in and 9in= base and height
