We can make the first bag 80 lb by adding 10 lb to it. That means we'd have to subtract 10 lb from the next sack, bringing it to 60 lb. We assume we can achieve it since 140 is the what you get when you do 80+60.

10 is the answer of 1/8 of 10. So remove 10lb from the first sack and put it in the second, and both bags are even at 70lb, and their total is 140lb.

This suggests that the very first sack is 80 lbs and the second one is 60 lbs.

2) If we add 10lb. to the first sack we make it 80lb. That means we would have to take away 10lb from the second sack, making it 60lb. We know we can do this b/c the sum of 80+60=140

3) 1/8 of 80 is 10. So take 10lb away from the 1st sack and give it to the 2nd sack, and both sacks are even at 70lb and their sum is 140lb.

4) That means that originally the 1st sack weighed 80lb and the 2nd sack weighed 60lb.
