This scientist performed an experiment where he weighed a pot with soil and then grew a seedling in it for five years. During this time, he only added water to the plant. At the end of five years, he weighed the soil and the amount of water added to the plant too. He found that the plant only gained about one gram of mass out of 76,000 grams of water that were added. He concluded that most of the water was exhaled through the pores in the leaves (stomata).
