Rounding Numbers

Round each number to the nearest hundred.

1. 900,050

- 0 is in Hundreds place let's look at the digit on the right of the number. 5 is on the right side of 0 so, let's round it up from 0 to 1 then replace the other digits to zero.

Therefore, 900,050 is now 900,100

2. 254

  • 254 to 300

3. 5555

  • 5555 to 5600

4. $540

  • 540 to 500

5. $25,460

- Since, 4 is hundred place let's look at the right digit 6 is right side of 4 lets round it up after rounding up replace the other digits that follow with zero.

  • Therefore, 25,460 is now 25,500

6. $455,329,950

  • 455,329,950 to 455,329,900

Step-by-step explanation

In rounding a number to nearest multiple of 10, look at the digit to the right of the number to be rounded:

  • If it is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, retain the digit and replace the other digits that follow with zero.

  • If it is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, add one to the digit to be rounded and replace with zeros the digits after it.

\\ \rm\longmapsto 900,050

  • See here 100th place value is 0 . and tenth place value is 50 hence it remains unchanged.

\\ \rm\longmapsto 254

  • 254 is nearest to 300 .

\\ \rm\longmapsto 5555

  • Nearest tenth is 5560 and nearest 100th will be 5600

\\ \rm\longmapsto 540

  • Nearest hundred is 500

\\ \rm\longmapsto 25460

  • Here its 460 hence rounded up to 500

\\ \rm\longmapsto 455,329,950

  • As 10th place value is 5 hence it remains unchanged
