complementary angles are 90 degrees so if we add both angles together we get 90 degrees. the equation is x-3+x+5=90. then we do algebra and so it goes to x-3+x=85 then to x+x=88 then to 2x = 88 then to x = 44. now we just do 44+5=49 44-3=41
