Example Jacob decides to save money for a new tablet. He will save $3 the first week and then triple the amount he has saved each week for 5 weeks. Write and evaluate an exponential expression to find how much money Jacob will have in his savings in Week 5. Represent the problem with repeated multiplication and exponential expressions. Week 4 Week 5 Week 1 Week 3 Week 2 3.3.3.3.3= 35 3.3.3.3 = 34 3.3.3 = 33 3= 31 3.3 = 32 Week 5 expression: 35 Evaluate the expression: 35 = 3.3.3.3.3 = 243 Jacob will have $243 in his savings in Week 5. won't let me post the table

Answer:

Initial saving is $3 and subsequent amount is 3 times the previous amount.

  • Week 1 ⇒ 3
  • Week 2 ⇒ 3*3 = 3² = 9
  • Week 3 ⇒ 3²*3 = 3² = 27
  • Week 4 ⇒ 3³*3 = 3⁴ = 81
  • Week 5 ⇒ 3⁴*3 = 3⁵ = 243

The expression would be:

  • S = 3ˣ, where S is saving at week x
