Answer:

x = - 3 , y = - 4

Explanation:

Given

-
(5)/(7) -
(11)/(7) x = - y ( multiply through by 7 to clear the fractions )

- 5 - 11x = - 7y ( rearrange )

- 11x + 7y = 5 → (1)

2y = 7 + 5x ( rearrange )

- 5x + 2y = 7 → (2)

Multiplying (1) by - 2 and (2) by 7 and adding will eliminate y

22x - 14y = - 10 → (3)

- 35x + 14y = 49 → (4)

Add (3) and (4) term by term to eliminate y

- 13x = 39 ( divide both sides by - 13 )

x = - 3

Substitute x = - 3 into (2) and solve for y

- 5(- 3) + 2y = 7

15 + 2y = 7 ( subtract 15 from both sides )

2y = - 8 ( divide both sides by 2 )

y = - 4
