If the mean of 25, 28, a, 30 and 32 is 27, then find the value of a.

Explanation:

The mean is calculated as

mean =
(sum)/(count)

=
(25+28+a+30+32)/(5) =
(115+a)/(5)

Then


(115+a)/(5) = 27 ( multiply both sides by 5 to clear the fraction )

115 + a = 135 ( subtract 115 from both sides )

a = 20
