Answer: 66 yd
Explanation: It might seem like a very difficult shape to find the area, but it is actually really simple. All you have to do is split this shape in multiple squares, then find each area of each square, then add up all the square's area to get the total area of the shape.
Notice: Please take a look at the image I included to see how I divided the shape.
Step 1.) Since the shape is in a weird shape that doesn't allow us to find the area by normal means, we will split it in workable shapes. In this case, splitting it in 3 rectangles is best option (see image below).
Step 2.) Find the dimensions of each rectangle you split. Since we have new shapes, let us find the dimensions of each shape now.
Notice: Some sides of the shapes are split in half, to find the total length of a side we just add up the splits of the side. In this example our length's of the Rectangle 1 and 3 where split by 2 and 5 yards.
Rectangle 1: Length: 7yd; Width: 4yd
Rectangle 2: Length: 2yd; Width: 5yd
Rectangle 3: Length: 7yd; Width: 4yd
Step 3.) With the new dimensions of each shape, apply the correct formula for the area of each rectangle to find the area of each rectangle.
Area = Length x Width
A= L x W
Rectangle 1: Area = 28
A = L x W
A = (7) x (4)
A = 28
Rectangle 2: Area = 10
A = L x W
A = (2) x (5)
A = 10
Rectangle 3: Area = 28
A = L x W
A = (7) x (4)
A = 28
Final Step 4.) Now that we have the area of each individual rectangle, let us combine all the areas to find the total area of the shape.
Rectangle 1 + Rectangle 2 + Rectangle 3 = 66
28+10+28 = 66
Note: If you have any questions please let me know. If not, I hope this helped. Your very welcome :-)
