Consider the function represented by 9x + 3y= 12 with x as the independent variable. How can this function be written

For this one, you don't need to actually do any work.

Function notation is the f(x) or f(t) notation, but with function notation, the variable in the parentheses must match the variable on the right side of the equation.

f(a) = 2b+3 won't do any calculation because of the mismatched a and b.
