Each term in the second factor is multiplied by each term in the first factor , that is

x(x² - 5x + 12) + 3(x² - 5x + 12) ← distribute parenthesis

= x³ - 5x² + 12x + 3x² - 15x + 36 ← collect like terms

= x³ - 2x² - 3x + 36
