Gingy started out with 40 gumdrop buttons. Every time

he did not answer Lord Farquard's questions correctly,
gumdrop buttons are taken away from his starting
value. If he did not answer 10 questions correctly and
20 gumdrop buttons were deducted in total, how many
gumdrops did Lord Farquad take for each incorrect
question?

Divide the number of total gumdrop buttons taken (20) by the number of wrong questions (10):

20/10=2

for each question he answered wrong, 2 buttons were taken.
