Youssef has $40 in his piggy bank and he spends $2 a day on a soft pretzel at lunch. Tiernan is selling his lunch each day at school to save up for an electric skateboard. After 3 days, he has a total of $22 and after 6 days he has a total of $34. In how many days will the two have the same amount of money?

Answer: 5 days

Explanation:
Tiernan
10 + 4d
10 + 4(5) = 30

Youssef
40 - 2d
40-2(3) = 34
40-2(4)= 32
40-2(5) = 30

They two shall have the same amount of $30 after 5 days

[Consider "d" is number of days, "y" is total amount]

For Youssef:

  • Starting amount = $40
  • Spending amount = $2

1) Equation created: y = 40 - 2d ____ eq(1)

For Tiernan:

  • 3 days = $22
  • 6 days = $34

Unit rate: (change in amount)/(change in day) = (34 -22)/(6-3) = $4

2) Equation created:

  • y - 22 = 4(d - 3)
  • y = 4d - 12 + 22
  • y = 4d + 10 ____eq(2)

For them to have same amount, solve simultaneously:

  • 4d + 10 = 40 - 2d
  • 4d + 2d = 40 - 10
  • 6d = 30
  • d = 30/6 = 5 days

Amount after 5 days: 4(5) + 10 = $30
