Discussion prompt: When we read something, we are generally not with the person
who wrote it because writing is often produced for readers who will read what we've written at a later time and, perhaps, in a different location from the writer. Because of this, readers do not always have access to the writer to ask questions for clarification. Think about something as casual as a grocery shopping list; the list might be written by someone who uses abbreviations like "t.p."; does this mean toilet
paper or toothpaste? And which brand does the writer want? Since writers and
readers are often separated by time and space from one another, what sorts of
aspects must a writer need to consider when he/she is writing something?
