Two eighth-grade classes are selling raffle tickets to raise money. One class is selling tickets for $1.50 each and has already raised $250. The other class

is selling tickets for $4.00 each and has already raised $115. Write an equation which can be used to find , the number of tickets each class needs to sell
so that the total amount raised is the same for both classes.

Explanation:

Let the number of tickets to be sold is x.

Then we have:

  • Class 1 ⇒ 250 + 1.5x
  • Class 2 ⇒ 115 + 4x

Since the amount is same we have the equation:

  • 250 + 1.5x = 115 + 4x

Solving for x:

  • 4x - 1.5x = 250 - 115
  • 2.5x = 135
  • x = 135/2.5
  • x = 54
