Some common Gothic conventions include mysterious villains and extreme emotions. The dual personality of Dr. Jekyll, which manifests itself as Mr. Hyde, embodies these conventions—Mr. Hyde is a mysterious villain whose connection to Dr. Jekyll is confusing for all those who know the good doctor, and he exhibits extreme negative emotions. At the end of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, readers realize that Mr. Hyde is Dr. Jekyll’s other personality, a personality that is free to exhibit the emotions and desires that he supressed to be accepted as a gentleman in Victorian society. In your opinion, who is more evil? Is it Dr. Jekyll, who pretends to be a gentleman and creates a personality to carry out his evil desires and acts, or Mr. Hyde, who is openly evil?
