Explanation:

When I do the math in my head I take the distance between 0.75 and 0 and the distance between 0.25 and 0 and add them together giving me the distance between the two points. To get that distance you would subtract the two numbers from each other with the absolute value brackets on the outside of the equation so it will not make the negative a positive. If the negative is a positive, it would make it 0.50 which would be incorrect. The distance between the two points here would be 1.0 if that was the equation. That is a way I used to figure out equations like this when I was younger. Take it for what it is worth.
