There are a few different methods of which you can solve this problem:

Method #1

Lets break this shape into 3 parts, First the large square, then the rectangle and then the triangle. First we can find the area of the square by multiplying 2 by 2 which will be 4,

Now lets work on the rectangle, Since we cut the square out of this shape, We are left with a rectangle of which the sides are 2 and 1, now you can multiply and get 2.

We are left with the triangle, This triangle has a side of 1, and 2 , which is 2, but we have to divide by 2, which is one.

Now add all of them together 4+2+1 = 7.

Method #2

You can multiply 4 by 2 then subtract the area of the triangle.

Alright, 2X4 is 8, now the are of a triangle is BH/2 lets substitute Base = 2,

Height = 1, 2*1/2 = 2/2 = 1

8-1 = 7
