Topic Sentence: This should state the main idea of the paragraph. It should also be one of the reasons listed in the thesis statement.
Set up Sentence(s): A quotation from a source will be used to support the main idea of the paragraph. These sentences need to prepare the reader for the information to come.
Quotation: This is a quotation or paraphrase from the text that supports the main idea of the paragraph.
Reflection: These sentences need to connect the quotation to the main idea of the paragraph.
Conclusion: This sentence needs to tie up the main idea without being redundant.
Example Body Paragraph:
Vaccines have shown they can eradicate dangerous diseases. Polio is one such disease that has been nearly eliminated due to vaccination. Polio is a virus that can cause no symptoms for many people, but others may have extremely severe symptoms like paralysis and death caused by the virus entering the brain or spinal cord. “The number of recorded cases has fallen from 350,000 in 1988, to less than 40 today, and from a presence in 125 countries, to just two” (“World is Closer Than Ever…”). In most countries, the disease is completely gone. Fewer cases mean fewer chances of the disease spreading and more lives saved.
