To take a taxi, it costs $3.00 plus an additional $2.00 per mile traveled. You spend $20 on the taxi. How many miles did you go?

Answer: 8.5 miles

Explanation:

Given information

Base fee = $3.00

Fee per mile = $2.00

Distance = x

Total money spend = $20

Set equation

3 + 2x = 20

Subtract 3 on both sides

3 + 2x - 3 = 20 - 3

2x = 17

Divide 2 on both sides

2x / 2 = 17 / 2
