12 times x (the first square) is equal to 16 times x-2 (the second square)


12x = 16(x-2)

Distributed


12x = 16x-32

Simplified (divided by 16)


0.75x = x-2

Subtract x from both side of the equation


-0.25x = -2

Both negatives cancel each other out


0.25x = 2

0.25 times what equals 2,...


x = 8
