Explanation:

Example:

√2, 1 + √2 and 1 - √2 are all irrational.

(1 + √2) + (1 - √2) = 2

The irrational numbers cancel out, leaving you with 1 + 1 = 2, which is rational.

For quotients, we'll use √2 again.

√2/√2 = 1

1 is rational
