Daisy works at an ice-cream parlor. She is paid $10 per hour for the first 8 hours she works in a day. For every extra hour she works, she is paid 1.5 times her hourly wage. If Daisy works for x hours in a day, and x is greater than 8, the expression giving her net earnings for the day is (blank).

If Daisy works 13 hours, she will be paid (blank).

Answer:

1) y = 15(x-8) + 80

2) $155

Explanation:

First blank:

use the linear expression form: y = mx + b

If Daisy is working more than 8 hours, (since the problem says x > 8), then she is getting $10 per hour guaranteed, which is $80 overall. So 80 will be our constant term, b

for every hour after 8, she is being paid 1.5 x 10, which is $15. This is our slope term, m.

So our expression is: y = 15(x-8) + 80

The reason we use x-8 instead of just x, is because x is the number of hours she works, but she will only be paid 15 bucks/hour when she works after 8 hours. So we need to subtract 8 from x to get the number of hours she works after the minimum 8.

Second Blank:

If Daisy works 13 hours, just replace x with 13 in our formula:

y = 15(x-8) + 80

y = 15(13-8) + 80

y = 15(5) + 80

y = 75 + 80

y = $155

If she works for 13 hours, she gets paid $85

Hare Krishna! :)

Answer:

Total net earnings = 80+15(x-8)

If Daisy works 13 hours, she will be paid $155.

Explanation:

Let Daisy works for x hours a day

She is paid $10 per hour for the first 8 hours she works in a day.

So, pay for the first 8 hours =10\times8=80 dollars

For every extra hour she works, she is paid 1.5 times her hourly wage.

The number of hours worked over 8 hours is given by = x-8

So, pay for the hours worked over 8 hours = 15(x-8) dollars

Total net earnings = 80+15(x-8)

And when x = 13

The pay is : 80+15(13-8)

= 80+15(5)

= 80+75 = 155 dollars
