A model that compares the fractions 1/3 and 3/5 is shown in the picture below. Therefore, 3/5 is greater than 1/3.

In Mathematics and Geometry, a fraction refers to a numerical quantity (numeral) which is not expressed as a whole number. This ultimately implies that, a fraction is simply a part of a whole number.

In order to compare the fractions 1/3 and 3/5, we would determine the least common denominator (LCM) of the two denominators as follows:

Least common denominator (LCM) of 3 and 5 = 15

Next, we would determine an equivalent fraction for the two fractional numbers by using a denominator of 15;

(1)/(3) =(1 * 5)/(3 * 5 ) =(5)/(15)\\\\(3)/(5) =(3 * 3)/(5 * 3 ) =(9)/(15)

Since the denominators are equal now, the fraction that has a bigger numerator would be the greater fraction, which is 9/15;

9/15 > 5/15 or 3/5 > 1/3
