A mother is presently four times as old as her daughter if the sum of their ages 6 years ago was 48 find their present ages

Daughter is 12 and mother is 48.

Explanation:

Let the daughters age be x years now then the mothers age is 4x.

6 years ago the daughter was x-6 years and the mother was 4x - 6.

So we have the equation:

x - 6 + 4x - 6 = 48

5x - 12 = 48

5x = 60

x = 12

So the daughter is 12 and the mother is 4*12 = 48.
