=> 4x - 12 - 2x - 2 = 2 [opening brackets]

=> 4x - 2x - 12 - 2 = 2

=> 2x - 14 = 2

=> 2x = 14 + 2

=> 2x = 16

=> x = 16/2

=> x = 8

2 ( x - 3 ) - ( x + 1 ) = 1

2x - 6 - x -1 = 1

2x - x = 1 + 6 + 1

x = 1 + 6 + 1

x = 7 + 1

x = 8
