Answer:

BC = 6 units

Explanation:

In triangle ACD, BE || CD (given)

Therefore, by Basic Proportionality Theorem, we have:

(AE)/(ED) =(AB)/(BC) \\ \\ \therefore \: (16)/(8) = (12)/(BC) \\ \\ \therefore \: (2)/(1) = (12)/(BC) \\ \\ \therefore \: BC = (12)/(2) \\ \\ \therefore \: BC =6 \: units

The length of BC is 6. The smaller triangle AEB has AE=16
And triangle ADC, ED=8 which is half of 12. So BC has to be half of AB, making length BC 6
