the range is the interval of numbers for possible y (result) values of a function.

so, what y values are possible here ?

clearly it goes from the very bottom, negative infinity, up to 2.

I see no way for other y values (> 2).

and usually we write such an interval with an open end bracket "(" or ")" on the side of infinity, because infinity is not a value and can never be reached. and the included end bracket "[" or "]" is used on an end, where we have a specific (and really included) value.
