Explanation:

5x + 2y = 9

-5x + 4y = 3

==> 6y = 12 ==> y = 12/6 ==> y = 2.

we replace y by its value in the first or the second equation, so will have:

5x + 2×2 = 9

5x + 4 = 9

5x = 5

x = 1
