Answer:

1
(5)/(12)

Explanation:

  1. As we can see, the mixed numbers have different denominators. Our goal is to get them to have the same bottom number so we can subtract them.
  2. What is the smallest number that both 4 and 3 goes into? (psst! 4 • 3)
  3. 12 is the correct answer! Now we multiply
(3)/(4) by 3 on the top and bottom, and
(1)/(3) by 4 on the top and bottom.
  4. Now we have 2
    (9)/(12) - 1
    (4)/(12).
  5. When you subtract, don't subtract the bottom!
  6. 2 - 1 = 1 and 9 - 4 = 5, so now we have 1
    (5)/(12).

If I am incorrect in my reasoning, please let me know so that I can plan better for my future answers. Have an amazing day.
