Check the picture below.

so we know the squares when filled up have an area of 8x8 = 64 ft² each, or namely 3*64 = 192 ft² total.

now, if we hollow out each square by removing a triangle from it that has a base of 8 and an height of 8, since area of a triangle is (1/2)bh, then the area we removed from each square is (1/2)8*8 = 32 ft², three times that is 96ft².

so if we from the total filled up square of 192 subtract the total area of the triangles or 96, we'd end up with the shaded area of 192 - 96 = 96 ft².
