Answer:

What is in the Placard

It is a picture of Cecil Rhodes holding up a cable that seems to connect the Cape Colony in South Africa to the British protectorate of Egypt.

Cause ⇒ Need for Raw Materials, New Markets and Nationalism

Cecil John Rhodes was a British politician and business man who wanted to build a railway that would connect the Port Said in Egypt to Cape Town in the Cape colony of South Africa.

There were several reasons he wanted this:

  • He wanted the British to have easier access to the raw materials of the African continent.
  • He wanted the British to be able to transport goods easily across the continent which would increase trade and access to new markets.
  • He was a patriotic British man who wanted the British to acquire more influence and territory in Africa.
