Explanation:

Last year, the company had x employees.

Today the company has 35% more employees than it did a year ago.

So now it has 100% + 35% = 135% of last year, that is, 1.35x

There are currently 43,200 employees

So


1.35x = 43200

How many employees did the company have a year ago?

We have to solve the equation for x. So


x = (43200)/(1.35) = 32000

The company had 32,000 employees a year ago.
