And these youngsters have to do that because they know they are facing adversity and are in a disadvantaged position. Conditions do not favor them, and if they want to overcome those adverse conditions they have two double their effort.

In general terms, society does not favor immigrants, people from different races, or poor social classes. So these young students have to do more than others in difficult circumstances in order to have a shot. They know they probably are going to have just one shot, so they better be prepared when that time comes.
