why might people who live on an island be able to preserve their culture for a long period without change?

in short because no other cultures are around you to influence cultural change. These people on the island would be a controlled factor. Not affected by anything else, the only thing that would affect their upbringing or culture is themselves. Whereas in the real world neighboring nations affect how we handle things diplomatically. This is not a factor for them. Hope this helps
