Do you agree with the Symbolist goal of bringing deeper meaning to art, or do you prefer, like many 20th century artists, to appreciate "art for art's sake"? Why?

Personally, I prefer creating "art for arts sake" because it leaves the art open to interpretation and accessible to the general public to enjoy, whereas the symbolist's need for deeper meanings made it difficult to understand and interpret an artwork from that period if you were not already an artist. Furthermore, creating art "just because" allows for more self expression and creative freedom instead of being confined to a set of symbols in order for people to understand the piece.
