Explanation:

  • Number #1 = x
  • Number #2 = y
  • x · y = 42
  • x + y = 13 ⇒ y = 13 - x

x · y = 42

x · (13 - x) = 42

13x - x² = 42

-x² + 13x - 42 = 0

(-1)(-x² + 13x - 42) = 0(-1)

x² - 13x + 42 = 0

(x - 6)(x - 7) = 0

  • x₁ = 6
  • x₂ = 7

y = 13 - x

  • y₁ = 13 - x₁ = 13 - 6 = 7
  • y₂ = 13 - x₂ = 13 - 7 = 6
