MY = XM

9x + 12 = 5x + 8

Subtract 12 from both sides

9x = 5x +8 - 12

9x = 5x - 4

Subtract 5x from both sides

9x - 5x = -4

x = -4/4

x = -1

XY = 5x + 8

= 5*(-1) + 8

= -5 + 8

XY = 3

MY = 9x + 12

= 9*(-1)1 + 12

= -9 + 12

MY = 3
