Given:

Cost of gift = $20.48

Mark pays for
(2)/(3) of the gift and John pays for the remaining
(1)/(3).

To find:

The amount paid by each boy.

Solution:

We have,

Cost of gift = $20.48

Mark pays for
(2)/(3) of the gift. So, the amount paid by Mark is:

20.48* (2)/(3)\approx 13.653

John pays for the remaining
(1)/(3). So, the amount paid by John is:

20.48* (1)/(3)\approx 6.827

Therefore, the amount paid by Mark and John are $13.653 and $6.827 respectively.
