I think of a number, subtract 2 to and multiply it by 5. This gives me the same answer as when I take 7 from the number and treble it. What is my number?

Answer:

The number is 0.75

Explanation:

Analyze the question one statement at a time:

Let the number be
x

Subtract 2;
x - 2

Multiply by 5:
(x - 2) * 5

The result equals
x - 7

Required

Find the number (x)

The equation to work with is:

(x - 2) * 5 = x - 7

Open bracket

5x - 10 = x - 7

Collect like terms

5x - x = 10 - 7

4x = 3

Divide both sides by 4

x = (3)/(4)

x = 0.75
