Imagine that the graph of y = |x| is carved in stone so it cannot move. What we can move though is the xy axis. If we move the xy axis 4 units to the right, then this gives the illusion the V shaped curve is moving 4 units to the left. It goes opposite whatever movement you do to the xy axis.

If we replaced x with x+4, then this moves the xy axis 4 units to the right.

Therefore, going from y = |x| to y = |x+4| will have the V shaped curve moving 4 units to the left.
