3x - y = 12 multiply second equation by (-3)

(-3)*(3x-y) = 12*(-3) (remember we need to multiply both sides of the equation)

-9x + 3y = -36 now subtract this from the first equation

5x - 3y -9x + 3y = 16 - 36 (-3y will eliminate +3y)

-4x = -20 and 4x = 20 divide both sides by 4

x = 5 if 3x - y = 12 then 3*5 - y = 12

15 - y = 12

-y = -3 and y = 3
