It depends on your yardstick. How are you measuring this statement?

The word civilization sticks in my throat a bit. Are we c;i;vilized. I would say not. Do you know that the Hollocaust in Germany/Poland was the first one where 6 million people (about 1/2 the Jewish population in Europe at the time), were murdered systematically with the latest technology of the time?

I would argue that we may have developed quite a bit scientifically and technologically, but I don't think our moral behavior followed as quickly. Indeed there are have several Holocausts that followed the one in Germany/Poland although they were not as systematic as the recent European one.
