Answer: C. rationalizing the denominator

Rationalizing the denominator is a useful step to simplify expressions where there are square roots in the denominator. It doesn't apply to actually solving a quadratic. On the other hand, the quadratic formula can solve quadratics. The same applies for choices B and D as well.
