If a linear function passes through the points
(x_1,y_1) and
(x_2,y_2), then the rate of change of the linear function is:


m=(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1)

From the given table, it is clear that the linear function passes through the points (10,27) and (11,a). So, the slope of the linear function is:


m=(a-27)/(11-10)


m=(a-27)/(1)


m=a-27

The rate of change of the linear function is -8.


-8=a-27


-8+27=a


19=a
