A few things we should go over:

Unlike square roots, cube roots work on negative values.

Cube roots can be though of as a value to the 1/3 power.

So lets look at ours:


\sqrt[3]{-8}

Any exponent or root that is even has a postive value. However this is odd, since its a cube root(1/3 the 3 is odd number), and since the number is -8, the outcome will be a negative value as well.

Lets ask ourselves this, what value cubed would get us 8?

Well, this is basically:

x*x*x=-8

Thinking of the numbers, 2 would work:

2*2*2=8

But since it is negative, it would be:

-2*-2*-2=-8

This means our cube root is -2.
