you solve this by using elimination or substitution in the system of equations.

Personally, substitution is easier for me so:

x+y = 5

y=5-x

1.50x+2.50(5-x) = 10.50

1.50x+12.50 -2.50x = 10.50

-1x+12.50 = 10.50

-x+12.50-12.50 = 10.50-12.50

-1x = -2

-1x/-1 = -2/-1

x = 2

y =5-x

y=5-2

y=3

Since x was the amount of raisins, and y was the amount of peanuts, we can say that Jeremy used two pounds of raisins and 3 pounds of peanuts to make his 5 pounds of trail mix.
